A skateable concrete bowl inside a Mexican restaurant where you can eat all of the tacos you want. For me, it doesn't get much better than that. Beach Burrito Fitzroy on Gertrude Street takes skateboarding back to its roots - when skateboarding was about jumping over a fence into someone's backyard to find that perfect empty swimming pool to carve around in. Situated in the middle of the restaurant lies just this - a collaboration between Pistonhead Kustom Lager and Beach Burrito Company - the Pistonhead x Burrito Bowl. With regular events and public skate sessions throughout the week, you can get involved or watch others skate this beastly pool.
The rest of Beach Burrito Fitzroy's interior boasts a retro feel as well. Black steel fences, white tiled tables and exposed brick walls are illuminated by bright neon signs throughout the venue. Booth seating surrounds the skate bowl on three sides and two levels so you can watch people cruising around the bowl from any angle of the restaurant. Weekly food and drink specials keep the crowds constantly coming back for more. The Tuesday $3 Tacos special is so ridiculous cheap that you might think it's too good to be true. But it's not, it's every week and they're delicious! I tried each of the meaty ones - barrio beef, pulled pibil pork and spring chicken. All were served in soft shell tacos and came with different proportions of garlic sour cream, spicy pico de gallo, chunky guacamole, and pickled vegetables. At $3 a taco, you can't really go wrong and you can satisfy an ever-hungry stomach without breaking the bank. Vegetarian options are also available - think grilled halloumi and chickpea fritter. It doesn't stop there though as there is a huge variety of burritos, fajitas, chimichangas, quesadillas and nachos to choose from. Just don't forget to leave some room for churros! For drinks, there's an assortment of Mexican beers alongside some Australian favourites. If cocktails take your fancy, there is a tequila-based list that doesn't forget other favourites like mojitos and piña coladas.
I hate tacos said no juan ever, so get yourself down to Beach Burrito Fitzroy for a bite and a skate!
